color | marsala | pantone color of the year

will 2015 be a year of contrasts?

if color forecasts are any indication, then maybe so.

color authority pantone, a division of x-rite that provides professional color standards for the design industries, named marsala as the color of the year for 2015.

marsala is a color that exudes confidence and stability

could it be coincidental that sherwin-williams and pantone both featured red and green in their marketing materials?

or, that berry red is one of the colors that benjamin moore suggests to combine with guilford green.

when you mix complementary colors like red and green together, you create brown.

pantone is receiving mixed reviews for choosing a brownish color like marsala as the color of the year for 2015.

color | orchid | pantone color of the year

2014
radiant orchid

color authority pantone, has named radiant orchid the color of the year for 2014.  pantone, a division of x-rite, provides professional color standards for the design industries.

leatrice eiseman, executive director of the pantone color institute® associates orchid, which has purple, fushcia, and pink undertones, with creativity and originality.

wendy donahue, a chicago tribune newspaper columnist, describes the pantone color of the year as 'one part cultural indicator and one part marketing forecast.'

so from a marketing perspective, the color orchid could appeal to fashion conscious, tech savvy, 20-30 year old consumers because they value creativity and originality.

would you describe 'it' colors, such as orchid, or other fashion trends, such as 'it' handbags or 'it' shoes, as individualist?  or, as conformist?

people seem to either really like or really dislike purple.  so, orchid could be considered an individualistic color.

if you are an interior designer, orchid could seem too reminiscent of 1980's mauve and teal color schemes to become 'the new new thing'.

'the kids are rocking an '80s-comeback thing, but mauve is like the one thing I will never, ever embrace.'
-jonathan adler, potter, designer, and author

if you really like purple, would you use orchid as an accent color in a neutral interior design scheme?

color | emerald green | pantone color of the year

almost a year ago, benjamin moore paints predicted that social media colors, like facebook blue and twitter green, would become some of the most directional colors for 2014.

now, color authority pantone, has named emerald green the color of the year for 2013.

pantone, a division of x-rite, provides professional color standards for the design industries.

emerald green reminds me of the emerald green and grey dining room, designed by atlanta interior designer kay douglass.

the dining room was named one of veranda's most memorable rooms for the magazine's 25th anniversary,

emerald green also reminds me of all of the georgian terrace houses with technicolor front doors in dublin, ireland.

my husband, bob, and i toured ireland with his parents while we lived in london.  living in london for five years was such an amazing european travel opportunity!

now that we live in the san francisco bay area again, emerald green also reminds me of the de young museum in golden gate park, which was designed by swiss architects herzog & de meuron.

herzog & de meuron covered the museum building in copper panels with a perforated pattern that resembles the pattern of the light filtering through the trees.  the panels are developing a green patina that also helps the building blend into the natural environment.

san francisco philanthropist and socialite, dede wilsey, was instrumental in raising more that $190 million in private funding and selecting the architects for the reconstruction of the de young museum, which was damaged during the loma prieta earthquake in 1989.

she is also renowned for her incredible harry winston emerald and diamond jewelry.
